Red Cross Aquatic Leadership Course

The Canadian Red Cross has been the leader in providing swimming and water safety programs to Canadians since 1946. Brandon's Community Sportsplex is proud to be offering the Red Cross Swim Pre-school and Swim Kids programs to children and adults living in and around the Westman region. In addition, the Sportsplex is pleased to offer Red Cross advanced instructing programs to individuals wishing to pursue a career in instructing swimming lessons.
STEP 1:
Assisted Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) Certificate
Course description: This certification course is a prerequisite to the Red Cross WSI Course. AWSI covers the foundation of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. Candidates are evaluated during 8 hours of assistant teaching and through individual study assignments. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are certified as Assistant Water Safety Instructors, which enables them to co-teach the Red Cross Swim programs under the supervision of a fully certified Water Safety Instructor. Once certified, Assistant Water Safety Instructors have two years to become Water Safety Instructors.
All registrants are required to show proof of 15 years of age as of final course date at the time of registration. The Swimming and Water Safety Programs binder complete with the Canadian Red Cross Information & Policy Guide will be handed out to each course participant on the first course date and is included in the course cost. Participants are expected to attend this course in it's entirety.
Course Length: 30 hours. Candidates will also receive their 8 hours of teaching experience during the course. Candidates not wishing to complete their 8 teach experience hours at the Sportsplex are asked to indicate this to the clerk at the time of the registration.
Course pre-requisites:
- 15 years of age as of final course date
- Successful completion of the Red Cross Swim Kids program (or equivalent)
- We will need a photocopy of the registrants birth certificate at the time of registration (can also be faxed/mailed in at least 7 days prior to the course start date.

STEP 2:
Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certificate
Course description: The WSI course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim Programs by:
- focusing on how to effectively plan, teach, and evaluate the performance criteria;
- applying information learned about the competencies in the AWSI course to the Red Cross Swim program content;
- emphasizing stroke development, drills, and corrective strategies;
- providing instructor candidates with opportunities to apply their teaching skills and knowledge through teaching experience assignments (may be scheduled concurrently with course or be assigned for completion after the course);
- evaluating instructional emergency response skills
Course Length: 25 hours + a minimum of 12 teaching experience hours to be completed during the course OR up to 6 months following the completion of the course.

Course expiry date: The WSI certification is valid for two years only from the original course date and candidates are required to attend a 4-hour re-certification clinic in order to remain certified to instruct the Red Cross Swim program.
Upon successful completion of the WSI course along with successful completion of the teaching experience, candidates qualify to instruct the Red Cross Swim program (7 Pre-school levels, 10 Swim Kids levels & AquaAdults)
